A Tale of Two States: A Hard-Learned Lesson in GST Registration and the Importance of Choosing the Right VPPOB Service Provider

Becoming an e-commerce seller is an exciting journey filled with opportunities, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. Recently, I had an experience that brought this reality to light — an issue involving the GST registration of my company in two states, Karnataka and Telangana. It’s a story of frustration, learning, and ultimate hope that I believe will be beneficial to fellow sellers navigating the complex GST landscape.

In June, I received a shocking call from Amazon, notifying me that my Karnataka GST registration had been suspended. No email or call was received beforehand from the GST authorities. On checking the Karnataka GST portal, I found my registration had indeed been suspended since May 22nd, 2023, and a notice had been served on the portal, stating ‘other reasons’ without any specific details.

I reached out to my Amazon Registered Chartered Accountant (RCA), whose VPPOB service I had availed to get my GST number in Karnataka. To my dismay, I learned that the premises were not a VPPOB or co-working space, as I had been led to believe, but rather a Hero Motors showroom. My inventory worth over 80 lakhs was stuck, and my input credit along with TCS was on hold. I felt betrayed. This was not the service I had paid for.

The GST office had suspended 70+ GST holders registered at this inappropriate address. The reinstatement process for the GST registration necessitated applying for a new number, which effectively put my input, TCS, and Amazon inventory on an indefinite hold.

Meanwhile, my company had received an NGTP – Non-Genuine Taxpayer notice in Telangana. However, my experience with the RCA here, Aspera Technologies (thegstco.com), was a stark contrast to my experience in Karnataka.

After receiving the NGTP notice, Aspera was proactive in contacting the GST office. They had all my details, promptly shared the contact information of the GST office, and asked me to mail the required documents. After verifying all the documents, I had a video call with the officer who cleared my NGTP case, and the issue was resolved swiftly.

Comparing my experiences in Karnataka and Telangana, it was clear that the choice of VPPOB service provider mattered greatly. Aspera had a system in place for maintaining seller documents, renewing rent agreements, tracking monthly returns, and following up with sellers and GST officers regularly. They provided a comprehensive VPPOB service while ensuring that the platform was not misused for fraudulent activities.

The hard lesson learned was the criticality of choosing the right VPPOB service provider. It is essential to verify premises, check the systems, and processes implemented by the VPPOB provider. Regular communication and reminders for renewals are vital services that these providers should offer.

Moving forward, I have decided to trust Aspera with my Karnataka GST suspension revocation case, in the hope they can mitigate my potential loss. This experience has taught me the importance of a thorough investigation before choosing a VPPOB service provider. A reliable provider, like Aspera, could make all the difference in the smooth running of an e-commerce business.

In conclusion, the world of GST registration is a complex one, but with the right VPPOB service provider, it need not be a burden. Through sharing my experience, I hope to guide my fellow e-commerce sellers in making informed decisions when it comes to GST registration and maintaining their VPPOB.

Note: This is a true story, not an imaginary one. The name of the Karnataka RCA has been purposefully avoided so that I can keep doors open if I need any help from them in the future.
